Conflict

  • Role of conflict – central feature of the screenplay
  • MAN VS MAN /ENVIROMENT/SELF

Variation of sex , age , religion and culture = provide variety to the conflict

Conflict = Change

Change is common, universal .
eg. bodies change , season change , lives change , feeling change and etc

People often resist change because of it’s fear of the unknown

  • people must learn to cope with change for survival
  • the action in the drama depends on conflict

Definition

Conflict = opposition of persons or force
-it is the interaction of opposing ideas , interest or wills = creates the plot
(eg. malay girl likes chinese guy , opposing and etc)

Plot cannot be constructed without conflict

Character —-CONFLICT—–> Goal
-end of the story nears when protagonist and antagonist approach their goals
and the conflict arises to generate maximum suspense and excitement

Writing for an audience

-Screenwriter = storywriter
cinematic experience not only made up of works u might put on paper . but the audience emotional reaction to that information.

Writer’s vision = connect themselves , vision , material , drama and etc.

Audiences want to be transported by a screenplay
-be in the world

Where do you look for a story
_inside yourself
-everything to learn about other people is already in you
-now , need to know how to connect to it.

-5 stories exactly 50 words each posted to ur blog.

Week 3

Storytelling tool one : Observation (in a conscious way)
-ability to see and record movement , physical characteristic and setting
YOU NEED TO .
-adopt a keen eye , develop natural sense of curiositY

An observed event –> subject to simple question –> set up to sequence of possiblities –>story

Question
-whom am i WRITING ABOUT
-who is my CHARACTER
-what is he/she LIKE
-what does he/ she DO

MINDLESS OBSERVATION

TRUE OBSERVATION
(Their movement , physical characteristics , location and etc)

Assignment : People watch
Trabscribe everything into a “people watch” page in ur blog

WEEK 4

tragedy = story -> something bad happen -> make u fear for character /pity/fear

  • plot (the way the story is told)
  • characters
  • thought
  • diction ( a form of acting )
  • melody (music)
  • spectacle (visually exciting to the eye)

-Cause and effect reveals to what may happen
-arouses pity and fear

Three act structure

BEGINING -> MIDDLE -> END
start of cause/effect chain climax , caused by earlier incident resolution (end everything)

EPISODIC PLOT (no link)

the only thing tying together the event is such plot is it happen to the same person
-Eg: sitcoms (mr bean and etc)

SIMPLE PLOT VS COMPLEX PLOT
only “change of fortune” anagnorisis

Character
-supports the plot
-protagnist should be in the highest position , and falls from gracE
*Character falls from grace because he does not know enough* mistakenly bring about his downfall

3 act structure

1st Act —roadblock –>2nd act —————–>3rd act
set up confrontation resolution
(character have to make choice)

Assignment
-find a image and tell a story that comes into ur mind when u see it

WEEK 6

EXPERIENCE
= UNIVERSAL AND TRANSLATABLE because u feel it and etc.

Tips
-if u dunno what to do with a character , put urself in his shoes
-see how he relates into the world he’s thrown into.

-The things happened to u , or are currently happening to u , make terrific story sources
-the potential ideas prompt ur desire to know more
-respond emotionally and intellectually to what you heard
-good stories are born in heart
-role of the audience , think in their shoe as well

Memory = past incident which u experienced or been told
write what u DUNNO cuz u will find some part of u that DOES KNOW :)

-post true of false stories
-put on ur blogs
